POLL: Should Dogs Be Allowed on Riverwalk?

A proposal is coming forward that would allow dogs on leashes on the riverwalk between the Clock Tower and Bethesda Park.

Dog lovers in Waukesha have few choices when it comes to taking their dogs to the park. The majority of the parks in the area ban the four-footed creatures.

has a dog park, but that is on the southeast side of the community.

It might come as a surprise to some dog walkers who take their pooch for a stroll through and along the riverwalk. Dogs are frequently taken for walks or even go swimming in the Fox River. But it is against the city’s ordinances.

But the city could open up a portion of the Riverwalk to leashed dogs. The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday to consider a proposal to allow dogs on a leash on the riverwalk between the Clock Tower through . The meeting is being held at the , 1900 Aviation Drive.

What do you think of the proposal?

I would love to vote yes, allow leashed dogs on the riverwalk, but too many people don't pick up their dogs' waste so that forces me to vote no. If people don't pick it up in their own neighborhoods why would they pick it up on the riverwalk?

I personally have no dog in this fight...OK...corny joke... But I don't have a dog. But I have friends who have dogs who would like to take their dogs to the park. I've gone on walks with my friends and their dogs. They clean up after the dogs and always tag baggies on the walks. Would it be possible to allow dogs in parks, but on a leash and with the requirement that the dogs need to be cleaned up after? True, the rules might not get followed by those who already break it – but they already break it. Would modifying the ordinances give those responsible residents a chance to to take their dogs to the park? My friends won't take the dogs to the park – not because they fear a ticket but because they know it is wrong to break the law. Too bad more people are not responsible.

Irresponsible dog owners is a major pet peeve. I am not one. I always carry at least one bag with me, usually more, and have picked up lots of poop that doesn't belong to my dog. Of course, there are many people who don't pick up their own trash, sometimes my second bag is used to pick up the humans "waste".

My wife and I were not aware Frame Park did not allow dogs (we've only gone a handful of times). I hope they change the ordinance for at least a section of the park.
