Official Election Figures Shows City of Waukesha Had 34.5% Turnout

Official figures from the City of Waukesha after canvassing show that 15,826 votes were cast in the April 5 election, more than reported in an unofficial, verbal report given to Waukesha Patch in the afternoon by the city clerk/treasurer's office on April 6.

The numbers reported reflected total voter turnout and were not related to the issue with the Waukesha County clerk's office.

The unofficial report was 15,002 ballots cast but that figure did not reflect the votes cast in aldermanic district 7, which were 824 ballots. Overall, 34.5 percent of the city’s registered voters participated in the April 5 election.

The ballot totals do not change any of the figures that were reported in the state Supreme Court race to the Associated Press by the Waukesha County clerk’s office. The city hands the tapes over to the county for canvassing and results for state and county elections for the unofficial reports given to the Associated Press. The city’s unofficial report on April 6 reflected only the number of voters in the election and not the state Supreme Court results.

A mistake made election night by Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus led to the entire city of Brookfield’s votes not being counted in the state Supreme Court race. The results lead challenger JoAnne Kloppenburg to declare victory before the Brookfield votes were announced in the canvassing, which gave incumbent David Prosser the edge in the state Supreme Court race by about 7,500 votes.

While the city cast 15,826 votes, 97 people apparently did not vote in the state Supreme Court election. According to official results from the Waukesha County clerk’s office, 10,471 people voted for Prosser in the city of Waukesha, 5,257 for Kloppenburg and there was one write-in candidate.
