Gov. Scott Walker greets plant workers while touring building on St. Paul Avenue.

GE unveiled Wednesday afternoon a $3.1 million innovative engineering center at GE’s Waukesha gas engines facility on St. Paul Ave.

The manufacturing company hired 115 employees in the past 18 months and renovated the 22,000 square-foot engineering center.

“Our products play an integral part in helping our customers maximize their energy investments. said Brian White, president of GE’s Waukesha gas engines. “In addition, we are continuously striving to reduce our emissions (and) provide cleaner, greener power to everyone. All of this is taking place right here in Waukesha, Wisconsin. GE’s commitment to this community is clear by the continued investment in this business. “

Gov. Scott Walker was on hand for the ribbon cutting. Afterward he toured the factory, spoke with workers and examined an engine that provided emergency power at the World Trade on Sept. 11, 2001.

“There are tremendous, tremendous opportunities to bring more engineers into play,” Walker said.

Steve Crandell, City of Waukesha Community Development director, said GE’s investment “solidifies the engine business” in Waukesha.

“More importantly it shows their commitment to the City of Waukesha for ongoing growth within this community,” Crandell said.

GE purchased the gas engines business in February 2011.
