City of Waukesha Recount Begins in State Supreme Court Election

34.3 percent of vote recounted in controversial Wisconsin county.

Ballots from the city of Waukesha in the state Supreme Court election recount are being reviewed at the Waukesha County Courthouse. The recount of the city's votes began Tuesday morning.

Lisbon is also undergoing its recount at the same time.

"It has been going smoothly," said Ellen Nowak, chief of staff for Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas, adding there were no major issues Tuesday morning.

As of Monday evening, Waukesha County had recounted 42,942 ballots, which is about 34.3 percent of the vote. The City of Waukesha had in the state Supreme Court Election – 10,471 for Prosser and 5,257 for Kloppenburg.

Waukesha County recounted 6,031 votes on Monday after the county received an extension to finish its scrutinized recount process, according to Nowak.

The Wisconsin Government Accountability show there were 125,070 votes cast in the race in Waukesha County, including 92,263 for incumbent David Prosser and 32,758 for challenger Assistant Attorney General JoAnne Kloppenburg and 49 write-in votes.

"Waukesha is going to take several days," Nowak said.

The recount in Waukesha County is under scrutiny after Kathy Nickolaus, the Waukesha County clerk, the city of Brookfield votes in unofficial election night results sent to the Associated Press. The mistake tipped the election toward Kloppenburg as the winner by about 200 votes but was caught during the Board of Canvassers review of the election tapes. The City of Brookfield, a predominantly conservative community, brought Prosser's votes to a lead of about 7,000 votes.

The mistake led Democrats to criticize the election process in Waukesha County and protesters gathered in mid-April at the courthouse calling for a recount and an investigation into the county clerk. Nickolaus has said but did
