Ambulance Bill Snafu Causes Confusion With Tax Returns

Letters were sent out to delinquent ambulance fee accounts stating tax returns would be intercepted for unpaid bills, however, the bills listed had incorrect charges.

Did you get an ambulance bill stating you owed more than you thought?

The City of Waukesha, through its new billing agency Andres, mailed out letters to more than 600 accounts from delinquent ambulance fees a warning that past-due accounts would be intercepted via tax returns. However, the bills that went out had incorrect balances on letters sent out March 19, according to a memo from the Finance Department.

“Friday afternoon, March 22, the phones began ringing incessantly with calls from people that had received the letter we sent out,” the memo states. “After looking the accounts up on our spreadsheets, it became clear that the balances listed on the original file were not the same balances as on the revised file from Andres. Many, if not most, of the files had incorrect balances.”

Reverse letters were mailed out Wednesday, stating the charges sent to the state are being reversed as the billing company sorts out the balances and the city works to get an updated, correct file, the memo states.
