Absentee Ballots Could Be Counted at City Hall

Waukesha Common Council approves ordinance that would create a Board of Absentee Canvassers.

office is hoping to streamline its election night procedures by counting absentee ballots at City Hall instead of at the individual polling locations throughout the city.

The Ordinance & License Committee unanimously approved Monday night an ordinance that would create a Board of Absentee Canvassers that would allow the ballots to be counted at City Hall. The ordinance will be on the consent agenda during the Dec. 20 Common Council meeting, according to Deputy Clerk/Treasurer Gina Kozlik.

“This change offers us the opportunity to restructure the absentee ballot process by removing them from the individual polling locations and processing them in one central place at City Hall,” states a memo from Kozlik. “Not only does this afford us greater control of the process, but it will additionally allow each polling location more time to concentrate on in-person voters as we head into the 2012 elections.”

The ordinance was updated with procedures put forth by the Government Accountability Board, “so that we have some assurances in place so that we don’t double count anything,” Kozlik said.
