On March 9, police were called to Grand Petro Gas Station, 304 N. Grand Ave., after employees reported a woman had passed numerous bad checks at the store between Feb. 21 and March 3. Officers examined the checks and noticed some of them appeared to be homemade.

There were 15 checks passed at the station for a total of $2,468.

Carvalho had previously worked at the gas station, but employees there were unable to track her down because the address used on the checks was invalid and a phone number for her was disconnected.

Police were able to track her down at her home, where she said she knew some of the checks were bad because the gas station had contacted her, but she had gotten them while working in New Jersey. She was unable to tell police the name of the company or submit any proof of the job existing.

Officers then examined her home computer and printer where they discovered a box of checks matching those passed at the gas station and she was then arrested.

Carvalho will make her initial appearance in court Feb. 13.
