Who Is Paying for Waukesha North Fire Damage?

A fire at Waukesha North High School that caused at least hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage last week will be covered by insurance, according to Superintendent Todd. Gray.

Schmidt Flooring was installing a new gym floor at Waukesha North on Wednesday. The Waukesha Fire Department is attributing the cause of the fire to  "the inappropriate storage and disposal of oily rags, which may have spontaneously combusted.”

The insurance companies are still determining who will pay – the Waukesha School District’s insurance company or Schmidt Flooring’s company, according to Gray.

Meanwhile, the damage estimate has not yet been completed as a large amount of smoke damaged the school. The gym fire was small, but the damage was significant, according to authorities.

School staff members are currently working at Butler Middle School and will be there until at least Aug. 19. Parents and students will be able to pick up iPads for the 2013-14 school year at Butler Middle School between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Aug. 15 and 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 16.

According to the Waukesha Fire Department, crews were called just before 5 a.m. after staff at nearby Linden Grove Nursing Home noticed strobe lights on the school building were flashing. A small fire was discovered in the gym and additional stations were called in.
