Waukesha Man to Stand Trial in Overdose Deaths

Kevin S. Cobus, 27, faces reckless homicide charges in the death of a Muskego woman and a Delafield man.

A Waukesha man who is accused of providing heroin to two Waukesha County residents who overdosed on the drug and died was ordered to stand trial after a lengthy preliminary hearing Thursday morning.

Kevin S. Cobus, 27, of Waukesha is charged with two counts of first-degree reckless homicide. He faces up to 80 years in prison and $200,000 in fines if convicted of both felony charges.

Cobus – who used heroin on a daily basis at the time of his arrest, according to court documents – appeared in court in custody for the preliminary hearing. He will return to court at 1:15 p.m. April 20 for his arraignment.

Cobus is accused of providing drugs to Jamie L. Hansen, 24, of Muskego, and Cody C. Riggs, 26, of Delafield, on July 12 and January 6, respectively.

Hansen was found unresponsive at her Muskego home with drug paraphernalia in the bedroom. Her father was performing CPR on her when officers arrived on scene.

On Aug. 30, a Waukesha County Jail inmate tipped off investigators to Cobus, telling them Cobus had been with Hansen the night before to obtain heroin in Milwaukee.

Riggs was found unresponsive at his Delafield home. His brother was performing CPR on him when officers arrived at that home. The brother told officers they had gone to Milwaukee with Cobus the prior evening to purchase the heroin that Riggs overdosed on. Riggs also was using oxycodone, according to the medical examiner’s report.
