Waukesha Man Charged after Taking Drugs and Crashing Car

Suspect tried to hide syringes in a recycling bin before police arrived, then he told officers he was just cleaning up trash on the road.

A 29-year-old Waukesha man is facing felony charges after he injected drugs then rear-ended a car while driving near .

Michael P. Schraven was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Monday with one count of second offense operating while intoxicated, one count of operating while intoxicated and causing injury and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted, he faces up to 6 ½ years in prison and $11,600 in fines.

A man driving in the 1000 block of North Grandview Boulevard Friday was rear-ended by a car driven by Schraven after the man slowed down to let another car turn into the park. When police arrived, the man was being treated for injuries. Schraven suffered only injuries to his nose.

Before police arrived, witnesses said, Schraven took a brown paper bag and placed it into a nearby recycling bin. Officers found the bag and discovered it contained syringes, a tourniquet and bloody cloth.

Schraven initially told police he picked trash off the streets and put it in the bins, but then admitted to owning the items, saying he used it to inject Percocet. He failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest.

Schraven was previously convicted of OWI in 2002. He’s currently being held in Waukesha County Jail on $500 bond.
