A 22-year-old Waukesha man is accused of driving drunk through Racine County Saturday morning and crashing into a tractor-trailer.
Roger Isidro Maldonado-Matamoros was charged in Racine County Circuit Court Monday with one count of operating a motor vehicle after revocation of his license, one count of third offense operating while intoxicated, one count of hit and run, and one count of obstructing an officer. If convicted, he faces up to 39 months in prison and $15,500 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint:
At 6:59 a.m. Saturday, Racine County sheriff’s deputies were called to northbound Interstate-94 near Highway G in Town of Raymond after a truck driver reported Maldonado-Matamoros was driving in a black SUV and changing lanes repeatedly before smashing into the trailer of the truck. Maldonado-Matamoros continued to drive with a damaged vehicle and hit the center median before coming to a stop at 7 Mile Road.
The truck driver followed Maldonado-Matamoros and waited for deputies to arrive. A couple who witnessed the crash told police they were about to call 911 moments before the incident after Maldonado-Matamoros passed them on the left hand shoulder doing more than 80 miles per hour.
Maldonado-Matamoros smelled of alcohol and deputies found a partial 12-pack of Corona in his SUV. He first said his name wasn’t hyphenated, but later admitted to his true identity and was taken in for a blood test.
Maldonado-Matamoros is currently being held in Racine County Jail on $2,000 bond while awaiting trial.
