The trial for a Waukesha man accused of providing heroin to a Muskego woman and another man from Delafield, who both then overdosed on the drug and died, will begin on Monday.

Kevin S. Cobus, 27, was charged in April 2012 with two counts of first-degree reckless homicide under the Len Bias law.

Cobus used heroin on a daily basis at the time of his arrest last year, according to court documents. He is accused of providing drugs to Jamie L. Hansen, 24, of Muskego, and Cody C. Riggs, 26, of Delafield, on July 12, 2011 and Jan. 6, 2012 respectively.

On Aug. 30, 2011 a Waukesha County Jail inmate tipped off investigators to Cobus, telling them Cobus had been with Hansen the night before to obtain heroin in Milwaukee.

Then in January, Riggs was found unresponsive at his Delafield home. His brother was performing CPR on him when officers arrived at that home. The brother told officers they had gone to Milwaukee with Cobus the prior evening to purchase the heroin that Riggs overdosed on. Riggs also was using oxycodone, according to the medical examiner’s report.

Cobus faces up to 80 years in prison and $200,000 in fines if convicted of both felony charges.
