Updated: Teens Facing Citations for Food Fight at Waukesha West

One girl received a black eye after being hit with apple, according to police.

A massive food fight Thursday at could land several students in trouble with police and school officials.

Waukesha Police Lt. Kevin Kober said the school resource officer is still investigating the fight but several students are facing disorderly conduct citations and school discipline.

“It sounds like it may have been a preplanned thing among some of the students and others jumped in,” Kober said.

While the fight ended without the need for a trip to the hospital for any of the students, one girl received a black eye after she was hit by an apple, Kober said. Another student was hit in the head with a tray.

The medical outcomes could have been worse, Kober said, as students in the lunchroom had food allergies to items like peanuts.

“It wasn’t a minor little thing,” Kober said.

Waukesha West Principal David Towers said he was unable to release information about discipline or the number of students facing discipline.

“It did lead to quite a disturbance in our cafeteria,” he said. “It was something that we investigated and we are holding students accountable for their actions.”

Parents and students expect the school environment to be a safe place, and the Waukesha West administration is dealing with the situation, Towers said.

“We have a great school community, and it left one of those marks on our school that isn’t a true reflection,” he said.

The Waukesha West administrative team sent this e-mail out to parents Thursday about the incident:

“It is with great disappointment that we have to share this news of inappropriate behavior with you. Today, during our lunch period, a number of students decided to partake in a food fight in our cafeteria. We are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing students who both witnessed and were involved in this inappropriate display as part of our investigation. Students involved in this incident will receive both school and police consequences. On behalf of the Waukesha West community, we want to apologize to the students not involved that had their school day disrupted by the poor choices of some.”
