Report: Waukesha Man Shot by Deputy

Shooting involved Dane County Sheriff's Department at hotel in Town of Middleton.

A 51-year-old Waukesha man who was shot by a Dane County sheriff’s deputy Tuesday was in stable condition at a nearby hospital, according to a news report from Madison.com.

The man is identified in the report as Geoffrey A. Herling. Herling was staying at a Town of Middleton hotel for an extended time period and had fired a weapon in the hotel parking lot, according to the report.

News reports state Herling went to his hotel room and would not leave it during a standoff. Eventually, the man, who had a gun in both hands, left the room and shot at Dane County law enforcement at least once, according to Channel3000.com

A restraining order was filed against Herling in Waukesha County Circuit Court on July 6. The case is scheduled in court for a July 19 hearing.

Herling also has been cited for disorderly conduct for a 2008 disorderly conduct case in Waukesha County. He also was convicted of his third drunken driving offense in 2006.
