The 'screaming' may have been an owlet. We had one a few years back. It sounded like someone was being murdered! There were even neighbors out at 3 in the morning with flashlights looking for an injured person! Turned out to be an owlet learning to hunt. They scream back and forth with the parent owl when learning to fly/hunt. Kind of like echo location, with a bit of horror movie sound effects thrown in ;)
