Police Officer Who Died on Duty Passionate About Helping Others

With a long track record of public service in Waukesha County, Town of Brookfield cop who died of apparent heart attacked is being remembered as someone who truly wanted to serve the community.

A Waukesha County police officer who died on duty Saturday of an apparent heart attack is being remembered as someone dedicated to public service who had a true passion for helping others.

Donald Bishop, 32, died Saturday morning while responding to a burglary call in the Town of Brookfield, where he was an officer. Although the official cause of death has not been released, officials believe Bishop had a heart attack.

Before joining the department, Bishop worked in various public safety positions throughout Waukesha County.

Bishop, who was alone in his police squad car, drove off the road near while responding to the burglary call, according to the Journal Sentinel. Other officers unsuccessfully tried to revive him and he was pronounced dead at Waukesha Memorial Hospital, the newspaper said.

Bishop joined the Town of Brookfield Police Department in August 2011, and previously worked with the village of Eagle Police Department, Waukesha County Communications Center, city of Oconomowoc Communication Center, village of Mukwonago Police Department and village of North Prairie Fire Department, according to Patch's media partners, WISN 12 News.

Bishop graduated from Mukwonago High School and Waukesha Technical College, where he trained in law enforcement, firefighting and as an emergency medical technician, WISN reported.

WISN quoted Town of Brookfield Police Chief Chris Perket as saying:

"It is an honor to work with Don here at the town of Brookfield. Residents of every municipality where he worked were fortunate to have him serve. He will be missed by his brother and sister officers here at the town of Brookfield."

The Journal Sentinel reported that Brian Taylor, chief of the North Prairie Fire Department and Bishop's longtime friend, described Bishop as "the type of guy who would give up everything to go help somebody."
