Pit Bull Advocates Hitting Waukesha Streets Tonight

Group has 400 people committed to protesting anti-pit bull legislation.

As a Waukesha alderwoman is working on bringing forward an ordinance that would address vicious dogs after a 2-year-old pit bull mauled his owner in late June, a group is planning a “Save the Pits Peaceful Demonstration” in downtown Waukesha tonight during Freeman Friday Night Life.

Alderman Roger Patton previously made a referral to ban pit bulls to commercial uses, such as junk yard security, but reportedly has since rescinded that request as Alderwoman Kathleen Cummings has asked for more research into an ordinance that would comprehensively address vicious dogs.

The Facebook group has 410 people who have committed to attending the protest, with another 228 RSVPs as maybe attending.

The protest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and last until about 9:30 p.m. The event states there should be no violence or unruly behavior at the protest.

“Please make a good representation of the breed,” the group states.

The group plans on walking throughout the downtown and passing fliers during Freeman Friday Night Live.

The Waukesha Police Department is currently determining its staffing needs for the event and may bring extra officers to assist with the larger crowd, said Capt. Ron Oremus.

“I am hoping people don’t actually show up with their dogs,” Oremus said.
