PHOTOS: Children Spend Morning Fishing with Waukesha Police Officers

Cops and Bobbers community policing program designed to give kids a positive interaction with law enforcement.

The young children squirmed a little bit when Police Chief Russell Jack asked them a question as officers from the Waukesha Police Department were looking to give another view to their already influenced young minds.

“It’s nice to talk to a cop, right?” Jack asked the group of about 20 children from Waukesha.

“No,” said several of them, although a yes or two were spoken by a couple of children waiting to go fishing Thursday morning.

“That is what we are trying to change, so that you guys see us not only when somebody is in trouble, you see us in some good times like going fishing and shooting a bow,” Jack said. “We want to spend some good time with you today when somebody is not in trouble. Cops are here to help you guys.”

The children were spending time fishing with several Waukesha police officers on Pewaukee Lake through the Cops and Kids Foundation, which was recently founded by former City of Pewaukee Police Officer Bob Kraemer. The Cops and Bobbers event was one that Kraemer was involved with while there was a City of Pewaukee Police Department. The City of Pewaukee Police Department closed its doors in December 2009 after city leaders approved a policing contract with the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department.

The grant money given from the Cops and Kids Foundation enabled the Waukesha Police Department to spend time with children who have seen the police department during times of trouble. The community policing efforts are designed to help the children see police in a positive light.
