UPDATE: Authorities Clear Intersection After Transformer Mishap

No one injured after tractor-trailer disconnects on way from Waukesha to Oklahoma.

A 103,000-pound trailer carrying a 140,000-pound transformer being transported from Waukesha Electric Systems to Oklahoma met with an unfortunate mishap Tuesday morning and blocked a busy Waukesha intersection for hours as authorities cleared the heavy object from the area.

The intersection is now clear, according to police, after the trailer was reconnected with the tractor and moved down the road.

The semi didn’t make it more than a few miles when the trailer became detached from the tractor. The Waukesha Fire Department’s attempts to lift the in operable trailer with airbags were met with limited success, according to a news release from the Waukesha Police Department.

Traffic is flowing relatively smoothly on the detours, according to the news release, and it is likely the intersection will be blocked for several hours.

Capt. Ron Oremus with the Waukesha Police Department said in the release that could be days before the heavy transformer is removed from the area if it needs a new trailer because the trailer is a specialty one that would need to come from another state, such as California.

The oversized tractor-trailer disconnected from the tractor causing it to fall to the ground, Oremus said. It did not tip over, instead the transformer is merely setting secured on the massive trailer blocking the intersection.

No one was injured in the incident.
