Complaint: Man Tries to Start Fire in Walmart Bathroom

Suspect tells police he was smoking in the bathroom when it lights on fire, according to a criminal complaint.

A 60-year-old Waukesha man is facing charges after he allegedly lit a fire inside the bathroom at Walmart.

Thomas R. Molenda was recently charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court with one count of negligent handling of burning materials. If convicted, he faces up to nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines.

At 10:24 a.m. April 5, police were called to Walmart after an employee spotted Molenda coming out of the bathroom and noticed a fire incident. Toilet paper had been dragged over the floor and lit on fire.

Molenda told police he was smoking a cigarette in the bathroom when the fire must have accidentally started. He also claimed there was another person smoking in there at the time.

He’s currently being held in Waukesha County Jail on $100 bail.
