A 41-year-old Waukesha man is facing charges after he allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s house and stole her mother’s checks.
Darrell D. Schmidt was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court on Friday with one count of burglary, two counts of identity theft and two counts of uttering a forgery. If convicted, he faces up to 36-½ years in prison and $65,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint:
On Sept. 12, Waukesha police officers were called to a residence in the 100 block of Hyde Park Avenue reported someone had broken into her home and stole items. The woman suspected her ex-boyfriend, Schmidt, was the person responsible.
The woman told police she discovered her mom’s checks were missing and two had been cashed at Waukesha banks for a total loss of $350.
The next day police were called back to the residence after the woman informed them Schmidt was sitting inside a truck outside of the home. Officers approached him, and he admitted to the burglary, as well as being addicted to cocaine and heroin.
Schmidt said he didn’t take anything during the burglary and that he stole the checks on a different occasion.
He’s currently being held in Waukesha County Jail on $2,000 bail while awaiting trial.
