Man Charged with 4th OWI with Young Daughter in the Car

Suspect, 44, told officers he had been drinking in Lake Geneva and was driving home, according to criminal complaint.

A Waukesha man is facing his fourth operating while intoxicated charge after he was pulled over Sunday driving home from Lake Geneva with his 9-year-old daughter in the car.

Shawn M. Wenzel, 44, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Monday with one count of fourth offense OWI with a minor in the vehicle. If convicted, he faces up to two years in prison and $4,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, at 10:05 p.m. Sunday, Wenzel was spotted by a Waukesha police officer traveling eastbound on East Moreland Boulevard with white smoke coming from one of his rear tire wells and his license plates were suspended.

After being pulled over Wenzel told the officer he was having problems with his brake drum and his plates were suspended after he failed to pay for something, but the officer noticed his speech was slurred and his eyes were glassy, the complaint states.

When he asked how much he had to drink, Wenzel told the officer he had “a few cocktails” while drinking in the Lake Geneva area and was headed home, according to the complaint.

Wenzel failed a field sobriety test and had a blood alcohol level of 0.10 percent at the time of the incident, the complaint alleges. He was previously convicted of OWI in 1990, 1991 and 1996.
