Man Charged in Fatal Drunken Driving Crash Will Stand Trial

Ihor Sahan, 18, will stand trial for his role in a drunken driving crash that killed his 17-year-old friend and injured two sheriff deputies.

A St. Francis man accused of killing his friend after crashing into a Waukesha County sheriff's deputy's squad car in Brookfield will stand trial, a court commissioner ruled Thursday.

Ihor Sahan, 18, was bound over for trial by Waukesha County Court Commissioner Thomas Pieper after a brief preliminary hearing on charges he killed Ryan Petri, 17, who was a passenger in his vehicle, and injured two deputies in the Nov. 1 crash.

According to the criminal complaint:

Sahan was driving Petri home from a concert in Madison where Sahan admitted he consumed six vodka and Gatorade drinks. While Sahan was driving home, two deputies were parked on I-94 near Sunny Slope Road in Brookfield in a Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department’s squad car.

Sahan was driving 74 mph before crashing into the vehicle, the deputies reported. The deputies reported being struck “very hard” in the accident that dislodged the squad car’s computer, chipped a deputy’s tooth and spun the squad car around.

Sahan’s vehicle was engulfed in flames, so the deputies pulled Sahan from the vehicle and freed Petri, who was unresponsive, according to the criminal complaint.

Sahan’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.135 percent, the complaint states.

Sahan will be arraigned Jan. 18. If convicted, he could face more than 15 years in prison and $100,000 in fines. He remains in Waukesha County Jail on $100,000 bail.

This is terrible to read. I feel for the families of both parties. Loosing the life of his friend and having to carry that guilt is is heart wrenching. At 18 years old so sad.
