Man Charged After He's Found Covered in Dirt with a 7-1/2-Inch Knife

Suspect told police he was at a party and people were trying to kill him.

A 21-year-old New Berlin man is facing charges after Waukesha police found him drunk and stumbling down the street with dirt all over his face and a 7-½-inch knife in his pocket, according to court documents.

Michael A. Mitchels was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Monday with one count of carrying a concealed weapon, one count of resisting an officer and one count of disorderly conduct. If convicted, he faces up to 21 months in prison and $21,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, at 12:02 a.m. Sunday, police were called to South Grand Avenue and Frame Avenue after a bicyclist reported seeing Mitchels acting suspicious. After police arrived, they found Mitchels covered in dirt and stumbling around in the roadway and waving his arms wildly.

Mitchels, who was extremely intoxicated had dirt all over his face and his shirt was wet. When police searched him they found the knife and he began to yell about how some people at a party were trying to kill him, the complaint states.

After police put him in handcuffs, Mitchels became upset, telling the officers he had served in the military and his friends had been “blown up fighting terrorists.” He continued to resist arrest until officers were able to put him in a restraint chair, according to the complaint.
