Loaded Pistol Found in Vehicle After Man's 3rd Drunken Driving Arrest, Police Say

Paul D. Stefan, of Pewaukee, had a .131 percent blood alcohol concentration when he was pulled over on St. Patrick's Day, according to a complaint.

A Pewaukee man had a loaded Remington Rand U.S. Army pistol in his open glove box while driving drunk in Waukesha on St. Patrick’s Day, according to Waukesha police officers.

Paul D. Stefan Jr., 66, was charged Tuesday in Waukesha Count Circuit Court with his third drunken driving offense and possessing a firearm while intoxicated. If convicted, he faces up to one year and nine months in jail and $12,000 in fines.

Stefan’s vehicle was spotted by a Waukesha police officer who had been made aware during roll call that Stefan drives while intoxicated and has a loaded weapon in the vehicle. The officer watched as Stephan exited the Eagles Club on North Grandview Boulevard at 11:43 p.m. Sunday and traveled south on Grandview Boulevard.

The officer pulled Stefan over at Silvernail and Meadowbrook roads after the officer noticed he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and the vehicle was traveling five mph under the speed limit.

Stefan told the police officer he had consumed four drinks at the bar. He failed his field sobriety tests, the complaint states, and he had a .131 percent blood alcohol concentration.

The police officer reported finding the loaded pistol in an open glove compartment and a concealed carry permit in Stefan’s wallet.
