Juvenile’s Bike Hit by Train in Waukesha

Boy limps away from scene, leaving behind mangled bike.

Just a seconds delay and it could have been an entirely different outcome after a juvenile boy’s back bike tire was hit by a train and he was thrown to the ground Thursday night.

The boy himself was not hit by the train and he left the scene before police arrived. Police reported the boy left behind a mangled bike.

“He was following a friend of his it appears,” said Capt. Ron Oremus, adding that the teens went around the railroad gates in an attempt to beat the train.

The call came at 6:26 p.m. at the railroad crossing near North Barstow and Cook streets. A witness reported that the juvenile limped away from the scene. The train was allowed to leave the scene at 7:09 p.m.

Police believe the juvenile had been at a nearby Speedway gas station before his bike was hit by the train.

“Despite all the officers efforts, they found nothing,” Oremus said.

The description from a witness placed the juvenile as a Hispanic male between 12 and 15 years old. He was wearing black and blue shirt and carrying a grey backpack.

“Our concern would simply be from the perspective in making sure he is alright,” Oremus said “I doubt we would have to tell him not to do it again.”

However, if the boy’s parents took him into the police department, officers would definitely talk to him about the incident, Oremus said.

“He essentially risked his life going across there,” he said.
