Man Buys Cadillac With Stolen ID at a Waukesha Dealership

Suspect tells police he's part of a ring that purchases cars with stolen identities in exchange for cash, according to criminal complaint.

A 52-year-old Illinois man is facing felony charges after he purchased a Cadillac Escalade from a Waukesha dealership using another person’s identity.

Carlos E. Vega, of Waukegan, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court on Friday with one count if identity theft and one count of theft of more than $10,000 via false representation. If convicted, he faces up to 16 years in prison and $35,000 in fines.

On July 30, employees of Boucher Cadillac GMC contacted police after they learned Vega had purchased a 2007 Escalade for $31,228 and used the identity of another man. The man contacted police after he received a title for the truck in the mail even though he hadn’t purchased the vehicle.

Vega was arrested in Illinois where he admitted to being part of a ring where people would purchase vehicle using other people’s ID and then give the vehicles to people within the ring for several hundred dollars. He said he needed the money to pay for his heroin habit.

Vega is out of custody and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
