Hundreds Attend Fundraiser For Slain Woman Killed In Brookfield Shooting

A Caledonia woman killed during the Oct. 21 shooting in Brookfield was buried yesterday, and friends held a fundraiser Friday for her family.

Laurin Radke, a hairdresser at Individuals Hair Salon, pulled the purple strands of a hair extension through Lindsay Hoover's hair in the Horlick High School Field house Friday in Racine.

Hoover came to the field house to show her support for Cary Robuck's family. Robuck, 35, of Caledonia, was killed when . Robuck was the mother of Horlick High School cheerleader Mariah Sturm, and she was very close with her boyfriend’s daughter Kira Scheffler, who is also a cheerleader.

Thomas Stark, a senior at Horlick High School, Mariah Sturm, and Kira are also friends. Stark started planning the fundraiser shortly after the news of Robuck’s death.

"We had a line a half-hour before it started and when we let them in, the whole field house was filled, well the back half," Stark said. "But I think it went very well."

A 2011 Horlick graduate, Hoover cheered with Mariah and Kira when she was in school with them.

"It was the least I could do," she said. I wanted to be there for their family. I'm grateful they are doing this for them. It's a hard time for them."

The fundraiser included selling purple t-shirts with the words “One Big City, One Big Family, T-Shirt Fundraiser in Memory of Cary Robuck” printed on them. The Racine County Sheriff’s Office announced their support for Stark’s fundraiser, which will raise money for Robuck’s family.

While the shooting happened in Waukesha County, Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said they supported the event because they wanted to get the word out about the steps the county is taking to address domestic violence, especially since about 2,000 of the 10,000 people jailed in Racine County were arrested for domestic violence.

Haughton killed his wife Zina, 42, of Brown Deer, and two of her coworkers at Azana Salon & Spa: Cary L. Robuck, 35, of Racine and Maelyn M. Lind, 38, of Oconomowoc, authorities confirmed this week. Four other women were injured, but on Saturday, the last victim was released from the hospital, Fox 6 News reported.

Haughton was involved a police standoff involving his wife in 2011 and more recently, his wife said he threatened to throw acid in her face and jealously terrorized her "every waking moment," according to court documents.

"This was an unfortunate event and when you look at what we’ve been doing in terms of domestic violence in our community," Schmaling said. "We have been taking a proactive step against domestic violence and we recently applied for and received a grant for notification of victims of domestic violence."

Radke wasn't the only hairdresser from Individuals Hair Salon in attendance. Several other co-workers were also on hand to help with the purple hair extensions, which were sold for $10 a piece.

Half of the proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward funeral expenses for Cary, which was held Friday.

Schmaling urges everyone that if they are or someone they know is in an abusive relationship, please contact the Racine Women's Resource Center at (262) 633-3233.

Cary, I will miss our many laughs we had working together. You were a God sent. I will never forget your cute smile, Even tho I was old enough to be your mother I feel like I lost a daughter. My heart will hurt for some time but I know you would want for us all to move on, that’s just how you are. My dear, until we meet again, enjoy your time in heaven and I hope one day to meet you at the pearly gates. Love you always, Mama Patty :(
