Apartment Residents Displaced After Cooking Fire Damages Building

The residents living at 355 Dodie Drive – a four-unit apartment building – were displaced Saturday after a fire caused extensive damage to the roof and one apartment unit with minor damage to the rest of the building, according to Battalion Chief Joe Hoffman.

The fire was originally reported at 12:50 p.m. as a stovetop fire. The woman who had been cooking was treated on scene for a minor burn to the hand but no other injuries occurred, Hoffman said.

Crews on scene extinguished the fire and checked for extension of the fire. When there were no signs of fire extension, the property was turned over to the maintenance worker, Hoffman said.

But within 10 minutes of the maintenance worker leaving the building, a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the eaves of a building. Firefighters were dispatched to the building at 2:13 p.m., where there was a working fire in the attic, according to Hoffman.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents, although one of the apartment units was vacant, Hoffman said.
