Mother-Daughter Shopping Trip Results in Criminal Charges

A West Allis mother and daughter are accused of trying to steal $2,100 in merchandise from Target in Waukesha. Police say one woman admitted to similar thefts in Oak Creek, Greenfield and West Milwaukee, according to a criminal complaint.

A West Allis mother may want look for different activities to do with her daughter after Waukesha police say they tried to steal more than $2,000 in merchandise from Target.

Linda K. Hartleben, 56, and Larayne F. Hartleben, 20, were charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court on Wednesday with one count of felony retail theft. If convicted, they each face up to 1 ½ years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

At 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, a security officer at Target spotted the two in the electronics area of the store placing numerous items into carts they were each pushing. At 6:02 p.m., they walked past the checkout lanes and into a Starbucks located within the store, where they each bought coffee and remained in the store.

After lingering inside for another seven minutes, the duo tried to push the shopping carts outside of the store, but they were stopped by security. Both denied shoplifting, saying they just stepped outside to have a smoke.

A total of $2,163 in merchandise was in the two carts.

Larayne later told a Waukesha police officer they came to the store at 3:30 p.m. with a list of items to steal her mother put together so they knew what to take. She said they had done this numerous times in the past at Target stores in Oak Creek and West Milwaukee, along with Pick ‘n Save in Greenfield.

Linda Hartleben admitted taking merchandise from the Waukesha store and getting ticketed with her daughter for theft in Greenfield, but denied taking anything from the Oak Creek or West Milwaukee Target stores.

Both women are currently free on $500 bail while awaiting trial.

I am just wondering how old are the mother and daughter are. It's good to see that people who commit multiple crimes such as grande theft will eventually get caught for what they have done.

We lost bushes also. I assumed it was from last summer's drought. We're located near Hy59 andRead More Sunset. I noticed dead trees at Prairie View and Sunset also.

I agree that the folks at this Kwik Trip are great at assisting disabled people like myself but IRead More disagree that all Kwik Trips are helpful. There is a law that all gas stations are to assist you if you have disabled plates or a hanging placard if you press the help or disabled key on the pump. If there is no key (and I think all must have them by a certain date) then you are to honk horn twice and if there are at least 2 employees on duty, they are to assist. The K/T on St. Paul is useless. I've waited there, watching at least 3 employees mill around the counter with 1 or 2 customers and ingnore me. The Grandview station same but I haven't tried them in a few months. The worst station for that is whatever the one on St. Paul and Prarie is. I pulled in to see a female worker standing on side of building smoking. When she went in she was greeted by a male worker and I was ignored by both. I'd like to do a survey on how helpful each gas station is to the disabled. Kudos to Fleetfoot Kwik Trip! Whatever they got they should share with their brethren. I would rather give my $ to K/T because they are WI based and they donate regularly to the Salvation Army

I am fine with this service--its great. However being handicapped does not mean employees need toRead More give up their breaks or other customers need to let you cut in line in front of their service needs.

Will these need water? Because the Garden Center at Target has great deals on "no water"Read More tomato plants, which would surely save me some much needed General Assistance money.
Kathy Spancrete June 13, 2013 at 09:14 pm
According to a recent episode of Judge Judy, tomatoes can be both poisonous and deadly. When IRead More called the posted phone number asking for a simple answer to my many serious questions, and all they did was put me on hold -- repeatedly. I cannot recommend a company that refuses to stand behind its own product, much less pick up the phone.
