80 MPH on Sunset Drive? Not a Good Practice

A man who fled police in his car also fled on foot, and was subdued with a taser gun.

A 21-year-old Waukesha man took police on a “midnight ride” last week down Sunset Drive at almost 80 mph, police estimated, before being arrested for his second OWI.

John Bulthuis was observed driving about 40 to 45 mph in a 25 mph zone on College Avenue just before midnight June 12. The Waukesha police officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, but Bulthuis instead took off, zipping about 2 miles at up to 80 mph before damaging his car in a median and coming to a stop on Fox River Parkway.

Bulthuis compounded his problems by attempting to run, according to the complaint, and was tasered for his efforts.

He told police he fled because he was driving without a license or insurance. His blood alcohol content was tested at .062, below the legal limit, but struggled with field sobriety tests.

In addition to the OWI, Bulthuis was charged with attempting to flee an officer, a felony, and two misdemeanors.
