Steppin' Out Foods: From Hangover Cure to New Business

What started as a side for a Bloody Mary has now turned into a new business. Find out where you can find Phil and Jeanne Esche's pickled asparagus.

It's an exciting time at Steppin' Out Foods.

For those of you who have visited us at the Waukesha, Delafield, WCTC and Piala's Farmer's Market we thank you for your business.

Who are we?

We pickle asparagus in two varieties, one is a spicy called "Red Hot Pumps" and the regular variety "6-Inch Spikes."  Our biz started out as by chance five years ago when we made up some batches for 'Bloody Mary's."  We served it to friends in the drinks, then put it out chilled as an appetizer along with cheese, sausage, dips, chips etc. Then the next time if we didn't have it out, we were asked if we had anymore, of course we did!  Next it was suggested we sell it at farmer's markets and in stores.

I have been semi-retired for a few years after an advertising/marketing/sales career. Jeanne retired from teaching in the Kettle Moraine School District in June of 2011.  We kicked the idea around about selling at the , then with their help we laid the ground work for our business and kicked off on Memorial Day Saturday May 26.  Since our inception we've added blueberry jam and soon will unveil our pickled Brussel sprouts and peach jam.

We have also been selling to restaurants and bars in the Waukesha and Milwaukee area.  Our product can be found at Discount Liquor in Waukesha, Taylor People's Park, River Mill Foods, Donnie Boy's and Chubbys, Fuzzy's Sport Bar, Paz's Pub also in Waukesha.  In Pewaukee we can be found at Park Avenue Pizza, The Sand Bar, Curly's Waterfront and Willow Run Golf Course.

We also use local products for our asparagus (from Jelli's Market in Helenville, just west of Sullivan and Priske Farm's in Rio).  We also buy product through Sendik's Market in New Berlin.  Our production is licensed through Watertown Farm Market Kitchen owned by Fred and Julie Guentenberg.
