ProHealth Care announced Monday that it will break ground for its new state-of-the-art cancer center on Sept. 17.

ProHealth also unveiled details of the project, which recently received final approval from the Pewaukee Plan Commission.

The design of the cancer center started with understanding the ideal experience from the patient’s point of view. The building was then designed to bring that vision to life.

“The building’s stunning architecture will create a signature structure in the community,” said Ken Price, ProHealth’s senior vice president for administration. “It will be both a testament to our community commitment and a symbol of the outstanding care we provide.”

The design will support ProHealth’s multi-disciplinary approach to cancer care, meaning that patients benefit from the clinical expertise of a highly specialized team of experts and that all aspects of a patient’s care are carefully coordinated from the time of diagnosis through treatment and survivorship.

The cancer center’s architecture will create a warm and welcoming environment, filled with sunlight and instilling confidence and hope.

The architects sought to anticipate the differing needs of patients rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.  The result will be a building that delights and surprises in multiple ways. For example, patients receiving infusion therapy will have the option of getting their care while sitting outside in a rooftop garden overlooking a tranquil pond.

“We are thrilled with the result of our design process,” said Peter Johnson, M.D., a medical oncologist and medical director of the ProHealth Care cancer program. “This project will deliver tremendous benefits for our patients and the entire community.”

The new cancer center will pull together, at one convenient location, all of the services patients need. It will be the centerpiece of an ambulatory campus that also incorporates a robust, full-service imaging and diagnostics center and a multi-specialty physician clinic.  The clinic will replace ProHealth’s Stone Ridge clinic, just across Pewaukee Road.

The following are features of the new cancer center and ambulatory campus:

  • Space for 26 infusion patients. Every patient will have views of nature and choices about the setting for their treatment, ranging from small groups of patients to total privacy.
  • Radiation therapy services will include a linear accelerator, a CyberKnife and high-dose radiation therapy.
  • The imaging and diagnostics center will include MRI, CT, PET/CT, nuclear medicine, interventional radiology, radiology/fluoroscopy and ultrasound, as well as ProHealth’s Center for Breast Care.
  • Cancer rehabilitation space including physical therapy and indoor and outdoor exercise areas.
  • An education center with classrooms and meeting space to support wellness and community programs.
  • Retail space including wig and prosthetic fitting, hair dressing and complementary medicine services.
  • A multi-specialty clinic with more than 80 exam and treatment rooms and an urgent care center that will be open seven days a week.
  • Separate entrances for the cancer center and clinic and diagnostic center, with covered patient drop-off areas.
  • A café with healthy food choices and outdoor dining.
  • An environmentally friendly project, built to green standards
  • 670 parking spaces, including convenient spaces for radiation therapy and infusion therapy patients.
  • An easily accessible 14-acre site in Pewaukee along Pewaukee Road, just north of the I-94 interchange.

ProHealth Care executives, physician leaders, community leaders and others will participate in a midday groundbreaking ceremony Sept. 17 at the construction site. The cancer center is expected to open early in 2015.

ProHealth Care has long been the leading provider of cancer care in Waukesha County and surrounding communities. The majority of newly diagnosed cancer patients in Waukesha County entrust their care to ProHealth Care.

ProHealth will continue to operate cancer centers at Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital and the D. N. Greenwald Center in Mukwonago, offering care close to home for patients in those areas. The outpatient cancer services now on the Waukesha Memorial Hospital campus will relocate to the new cancer center in Pewaukee.
