Obituary: Myrtle M. "Grango" Sommer

Milwaukee woman dies peacefully at age 100.

Myrtle M. “Grango” Sommer, of Milwaukee, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Luther Manor Care Facility at the age of 100 years.

She was born on September 16, 1912, in Milwaukee, WI, the daughter of Henry and Mary Theis.  Myrtle enjoyed playing the piano and organ and taught piano from her parents’ home.  Myrtle was united in marriage to Paul Steven Sommer on June 20, 1936 at her parent’s home in Wauwatosa. She was a lifelong Christian Scientist and had been a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist-West Allis, where she was also a Sunday School teacher and a faithful volunteer in the Christian Science Reading Room, and later a member of First Church of Christ Scientist-Waukesha. She was a past member of the Milwaukee Archeological Research Society and The Milwaukee Astronomical Society.  She had belonged to Karsten’s Place Dance Studio where she participated in ballroom dance competitions and made her own dance costumes.  She enjoyed spending time with family, especially camping and staying at the cabin in Northern Wisconsin.  Myrtle was a sales associate for many years at Marshall Fields in Milwaukee and later at Lou Fritzel’s.   

Myrtle will be sadly missed by her children, Marylin J. (Russell C.) Steinke of Milwaukee, and William H. Sommer of West Allis; loving grandma to Andrea (Thomas) Kniewel of Rhinelander, WI, and Mishell (James) Bayer of West Allis; cherished great-grandma to Noah Bayer and Alexander Kniewel. Also surviving are other relatives and friends. Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Sommer, and a daughter-in-law, Sharon Sommer.

The visitation for Myrtle will be held from 10 a.m. until the noon funeral service on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home, 237 N. Moreland Blvd., Waukesha, WI 53188. Private burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery, Palmyra, Wisconsin.
