Obituary: Gifford G. Sutherland

Waukesha man was known for telling jokes.

Gifford G. Sutherland, of Waukesha, died on Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, at his home at the age of 75.

He was born in Cumberland on April 1, 1936, the son of Clarence and Dorothy (nee Lewis) Sutherland. He was a 1954 graduate of Cumberland High School and then followed his parents to Waukesha.

On March 2, 1957, he married Joyce Rohde from Shell Lake in Cumberland. He was employed by Iron Range in Minnesota, Speeds, Dick’s Appliance, Ulness Appliance in Pewaukee and then Sears of Waukesha where he worked for 25 years.  Gifford was a longtime member of Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church where he served as an usher.

He loved to travel and enjoyed camping, canoeing, hunting, fishing and being outdoors and in his later years traveling with his mobile home and telling many jokes. He was an avid bowler and loved country music and dancing with his wife.  Gifford was known for his wonderful sense of humor and could fix almost anything. He had four children who loved him very much.  

He will be deeply missed by his wife Joyce of Waukesha and their children: Juliann (Aaron) Kjenaas of Park Rapids, MN, Wendy (Richard) Clark of Waukesha, Debora Sutherland of Eagle, Michael Sutherland of Los Angeles, CA, and granddaughter Emily Rose Kjenaas.  He is further survived by his sister Joyce Swanson of Fridley, MN, sister-in-law Lois Meyers along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many fun-loving friends.  He was preceded in death by his grandson Alex Clark, brother Marvin, sister Delores (Don) Mork, brother-in-law Anthony Swanson, his father, his mother  and step-father Curtis George.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. until the noon funeral service at , 1052 Whiterock Ave.,Waukesha, WI 53186. Reverend Larry Gates will preside. Graveside services will immediately follow at Prairie Home Cemetery.  If desired, memorials are appreciated to the Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church Kitchen Fund (address above).
