Obituary: Edmond “Ned” J. Vaklyes, Jr.

Waukesha attorney, 60, died Friday at home unexpectedly.

Attorney Edmond “Ned” J. Vaklyes, Jr., of Waukesha, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 26, 2013 at home at age 60.

He was born on March 19, 1953 in Wilmington, Delaware, the son of Edmond and Marjorie (Nuding) Vaklyes. Ned was a 1975 graduate of the University of Illinois where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. On July 23, 1977, Ned was united in marriage to the former Karen E. Iwersen.  

He attended Marquette University Law School, graduating in 1978. Ned passed the State Bar Exam in May of 1978 and immediately began practicing law with John Buckley in the Associated Bank building on Sunset Drive. Over the years he practiced law with many other attorneys until he joined Congdon, Ward, and Walden as a partner. In 2000 the firm changed to Walden, Schuster and Vaklyes where he has been a partner there until the present. Ned practiced law in Waukesha County, Milwaukee County and throughout southeastern Wisconsin, specializing in Probate and Trust Administration, Estate Planning, including Wills, Trusts, Health Care and Financial Powers of Attorney, Medical Assistance, Title XIX, Guardianships and Protective Placement, Real Estate, and Elder Law. Ned always placed his clients’ needs first, employing a practical problem solving approach.

Ned was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a member of the Wisconsin State Bar Association – Real Estate Section, Probate & Trust Law Section, Elder Law Section, Tax Law Section. He was also a member of the Waukesha County Bar Association, Probate Section, Real Estate Section, Milwaukee County Bar Association, Waukesha County Probate Court, Bench/Bar Committee, Past Board Member Interfaith Caregiving Network Board of Directors, President 2004-2005, Advisory Council Chair since 2006, Interfaith Senior Programs, Past Board Member of the Visiting Nurses Association Board of Directors, Past Board Member Retired Senior Volunteer Program Board of Directors, and Past Board Member of the Waukesha West High School Booster Club Board of Directors.

Ned loved the outdoors, especially fishing, boating, scuba diving, grilling out, and parties at the lake cottage.

Surviving Ned is his loving wife of 35 years Karen, sons; Edmond “Joe” (Molly) Vaklyes III of Brookfield, WI, Erik “Jason” (Harriet) Vaklyes of Dallas, TX, and Andrew “A.J.” Vaklyes, of Madison, WI. Also surviving are sisters; Carol (Patrick) Hahn of Naperville, IL, and Nancy (Mike) Eddy of Ormond Beach, FL, father-in-law and mother-in-law; John and Marie Iwersen of Seattle, WA. Ned is further survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives, many dear friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The visitation for Ned will be held from 1 p.m. until the 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, May 1, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 225 S. Hartwell Avenue, Waukesha, Wisconsin 53186. The Rev. Howard Haase will be officiating. Interment will take place on Thursday, May 2,  at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, at 10:30 a.m. (Please meet at the cemetery).
