Student photographers win fashion competition

A unique fashion fusion competition between Milwaukee-area college students resulted in success for two teams from Carroll University. The Metal+Material event combined fashion design, still photography and video, and was sponsored by the Richard and Nina Edelman Family Fund for Arts and Education.

Teams consisting of current students, alumni, and a faculty adviser were challenged to design a fashion shoot that incorporated public art from Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward. Each shoot featured one of three assigned sculptures that were interpreted in any way the teams saw fit. The teams presented to a public audience and a panel of judges at the Metal+Material Gala Event on Dec. 11, 2013.

Carroll University students won the $1,500 second place award and a $500 honorable mention. The teams were:

Team LaChapelle (second place), with team leader Sarah Tennant, a senior from Geneva, Ill.; senior Leigh Emmett of Hales Corners, Wis.; sophomore Morgan Hetzel of South Milwaukee, Wis.; and senior Alicia Zuberbier of Hortonville, Wis. They focused on the public art sculpture “Little Dancer Aged 14,” located in Gaslight Park. Their prize will fund student travel to Baltimore, Md., for the Society for Photographic Education conference in March 2014.

Sunrise (honorable mention), featuring team leader Lexie Bragg, a senior from Plover, Wis.; sophomore Marissa Garretto of Kenosha, Wis.; sophomore Sarah Butcher of Janesville, Wis.; and Danielle Johnson, a 2010 Carroll graduate from Muskego, Wis. Their photos featured model Sarah and sculpture “Sunrise,” located in the Erie Street Plaza. Their award will benefit Carroll’s photography studio with the purchase of new supplies or equipment.

Both teams were mentored by faculty adviser Philip Krejcarek, a photographer and professor of art.

Carroll, Wisconsin’s oldest four-year institution of higher learning, is an independent, co-educational comprehensive university grounded in the liberal arts tradition. Incorporated in 1846, it offers bachelor’s degrees in 57 majors and master’s degrees in business administration, education, exercise physiology, graphic communication, nursing, physician assistant studies and software engineering, as well as a clinical doctorate in physical therapy.
