Milwaukee County District Attorney addresses Carroll University

Prosecution is more than just “locking up bad guys,” believes John Chisholm, District Attorney of Milwaukee County. He takes a “smart on crime” approach to reduce crime and improve communities.

On Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, DA Chisholm will present “Crime in the Metropolitan Milwaukee Community” at Carroll University. He will speak from 10 a.m. to noon in the Dorothy Goff Frisch Recital Hall of Shattuck Music Center, 218 N. East Ave., Waukesha. This event is free and open to the public.

Chisholm has served as Milwaukee County’s district attorney since 2007. Prior to the 2006 election, he was an assistant district attorney in the county office for 13 years, handling violent crime, drug and firearm prosecutions, and supervising its gun unit from its inception in 1999 until he was sworn in as district attorney.

He is a veteran of the U.S. Army, and has worked with the Veterans’ Administration and collaborative partners to establish resources for veterans who encounter the criminal justice system in Milwaukee County, resulting in the opening of the Veterans Treatment Initiative and Treatment Court.

Chisholm earned a Juris Doctor degree from University of Wisconsin Law School. He serves on the boards of the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission; Safe & Sound, a community organization for maintaining public safety in Milwaukee; and Governor’s Council on Offender Reentry. He chairs the boards of Milwaukee County Community Justice Council and the Washington, D.C.-based Association of Prosecuting Attorneys. Chisholm also is past chair of the Milwaukee High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area board.

During Chisholm’s tenure, Milwaukee County was selected as one of seven seed sites for the National Institute of Corrections’ Evidence-Based Decision Making Framework for more collaborative practices in local criminal justice systems.
