Italian maestro directs Carroll ensembles

International maestro Filippo Salemmi returns to Carroll University as a special guest conductor of the Wind Symphony on Friday, March 7, 2014. The concert, which also features Carroll’s Jazz Ensemble and Choirs, begins at 8 p.m. in Shattuck Music Center, 218 N. East Ave., Waukesha. This event is free and open to the public.

The maestro, who is music director of the City Band of Bevagna in Italy, first visited Carroll University in April 2013. He and Lawrence Dale Harper, professor of music, participated in an exchange where each directed the other’s ensembles.

Salemmi will direct Carroll’s Wind Symphony in performances of “Pageant” by Vincent Persichetti, “October” by Eric Whitacre and “Three Dances of Enchantment” by Luigi Zaninelli.

Carroll’s Jazz Ensemble is directed by Peter Lange, and will be joined by Carroll Choirs for the theme from “New York, New York,” and a medley of some of the beloved music of Duke Ellington Orchestra.

Since 1987, Salemmi has conducted the symphonic wind band, City of Bevagna, and the municipal school of music, N. Maurizi, in Bevagna, where he teaches chamber music, clarinet, composition and music theory. He also conducts the symphonic wind band, City of Norcia, and the school of music, A. Bartoloni, in Norcia. Additionally, Salemmi is conductor of the Youth Wind Orchestra of Umbria and a stage orchestral project organized by the Region of Umbria with young musicians ages 14-20.

Salemmi has conducted numerous concerts in France, Luxembourg, Austria, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Spain, and the United State (Stanford University, Drexel University, Philadelphia). He also has conducted in prestigious festivals in Lecco, Palermo, Comiso, Rome, Milan, Bergamo and Siena.

He has the distinction of curating and directing the recording of “Royal March” of G. Gabetti, performed by the Symphonic Wind Band of Bevagna. This piece was featured on the soundtrack of the film, “Life is Beautiful,” by Roberto Benigni, winner of three Academy Awards.
