Emeritus professor honored with Peace Builder Award

Dr. Bud Hudson, professor emeritus of chemistry at Carroll University, and his wife Sara were the first recipients of the Peace Builder Award at Plowshare Center’s 25th anniversary celebration on March 21, 2014. They were recognized for their work in creating meaningful connections between Carroll, local Waukesha schools and communities throughout the world.

According to Sally Michalko, president of the board of directors at Plowshare, the award recognizes individuals and groups from southeast Wisconsin who have made a contribution to peace and/or non-violent solutions to conflict and/or social justice by enhancing, understanding and cooperation among people from diverse ethnic, religious racial and/or socioeconomic backgrounds.

Bud and Sara have worked to enrich lives through cross-cultural experiences. Bud helped develop programs in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Kenya and Nepal for Carroll’s New Cultural Experiences Program. He and Sara then initiated several spin-offs with the help of colleagues and friends. The nominator noted, “Wherever Bud and Sara live, they teach peace and justice in the community. Peace and justice are core values of their lives and they share that enthusiasm with all they meet.”
