How people learn, what should be taught by whom, and to what ends are ongoing questions in education research, with the added complexities of technological advances and new developments in methodology and assessment. “The Power of Education Research for Innovation in Practice and Policy” is the theme of the 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).
Five faculty from the Education Department at Carroll University will present at this conference, to be held in Philadelphia, Pa., from April 3-7, 2014. AERA selected papers that examine the many changes occurring across education research, from its design to implementation, in areas such as learning, pedagogy, school systems, higher education and education inequality. Featured scholarship also addresses the possibilities of education research and how it can tackle persisting issues with innovative resolutions.

- Dr. Kimberly White is an assistant professor and chair of the Department of Education at Carroll University. She holds a doctoral degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has more than 15 years of experience in the field of education. Her primary areas of research include teacher identity, teacher learning, and religion and education.
- Kathrine Kramer is an assistant professor with 20 years of experience in teacher education and professional development. Her research interests include educator preparation, curriculum development and special education.
Kretchmar, K., Sondel, B., & Ferrare, J. “The Power of the Network: Teach For America’s Impact on the Deregulation of Teacher Education”
- Dr. Kerry Kretchmar is an assistant professor who earned a doctoral degree from UW-Madison. Her research interests include examining the way market-based reforms are impacting teachers, teaching and teacher education.
Pickett, R. “A Framework of Assets Essential for Enhancing Teacher Employability”

- Dr. Robert Pickett is an assistant professor who has more than 40 years of experience in the field. He earned a master’s degree at the University of Iowa and a doctorate at UW-Madison. His research interests are special education, teacher employability and spiritual development.
Stickles, R., & Danielson, M.L. “A Constructivist Graduate Learning Community Model for Teacher Development”
- Dr. Rachel Stickles is an assistant professor who teaches foundation courses and serves as an adviser. She has a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California. Her areas of research include learning communities, technology use to transform learning and teacher dispositions.
In a message to society members, Barbara Schneider, AERA president, and Mark Berends, annual meeting program chair, wrote, “We hope to see you all in Philadelphia, that city of brotherly and sisterly love, where we can ring a new bell that reaffirms our pride in being education researchers and our visions for the future.”
