Carroll University to host Wisconsin Special Olympics

Carroll University will host the Special Olympics Wisconsin State Outdoor Sports Tournament on Aug. 2-4, 2013, the first time the event will be held in Waukesha.

Carroll University will host the Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) State Outdoor Sports Tournament on Aug. 2-4, 2013, the first time the event will be held in Waukesha.

About 900 youth and adult athletes will be joined by about 300 coaches, 120 volunteers, Special Olympics staff, and hundreds of athletes’ family members and friends for the weekend event. Teams will begin arriving at Carroll on Friday, Aug. 2; competition will be 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4.

Several hundred athletes, coaches and staff will stay in Carroll student residence halls and have their meals on campus. The rest of the competitors live close enough to commute to competition venues.

“We are honored to be chosen as the new site for this Special Olympics Wisconsin event,” said Dr. Douglas N. Hastad, Carroll president. “Athletes, coaches and Special Olympics staff will find excellent accommodations at Carroll. The university and the Waukesha community welcome Special Olympics families and visitors to our city.”

SOWI has held its summer outdoor sport tournament in Eau Claire for 20 years, but relocated to southeastern Wisconsin because many of the athletes live in the area.

During the tournament, bocce will be played on Carroll’s Dennis Punches Track and Field Complex, tee ball will be played at Carroll’s Kilgour Softball Field, and tennis will be played at Carroll’s Kilgour-Trailblazer Tennis Center. Golf competition will be at Moor Downs Golf Course in Waukesha and softball competition will be at the Saratoga Softball Complex, also in Waukesha.

All events are free and open to the public.

On Saturday, Aug. 3, health professionals will offer dental, foot, blood pressure and bone density screenings, and nutritional advice to SOWI athletes from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Carroll University Campus Center, 101 N. East Ave.
