Dr. John Garrison, assistant professor of English at Carroll University, will conduct research at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., in summer 2013.

As a fellow, Garrison will be a scholar-in-residence and will participate in the intellectual life of the Folger library. His particular interests are the letters of Francis Bacon and commonplace journals from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Garrison’s research will contribute to his forthcoming book, which focuses on representations of friendship in early modern literature by Francis Bacon, William Shakespeare, John Milton, Aemilia Lanyer and other Renaissance writers. He also will acquire digital assets to be used in a web-based application that he plans to develop later this year in collaboration with two other Carroll faculty: Philip Krejcarek, professor of art and chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, and Michael Mortensen, a full-time lecturer in the graphic communication program. This digital humanities project will help users explore the role of Shakespearean acting within Wisconsin’s long tradition of summer stock theater.

The Folger Shakespeare Library is home to the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare materials, and major collections of other rare Renaissance books, manuscripts and works of art. It serves a wide audience of researchers, visitors, teachers, students, families and theater- and concert-goers. Its well-known public programs include plays, concerts, literary readings, family activities and exhibitions, as well as numerous K-12 and college programs for students and teachers. The Folger opened in 1932 as a gift to the nation from Henry Clay Folger and his wife, Emily Jordan Folger. It is administered by a Board of Governors of Amherst College, Folger’s alma mater.

Garrison joined the Carroll faculty in 2011. He specializes in poetry and drama from the early modern period, and teaches courses on Shakespeare, poetry and gender studies. His essays on early modern literature appear in several peer-reviewed, scholarly journals, including “Milton Quarterly,” “Studies in Philology” and “Literature Compass.” He recently received fellowships from the Beinecke Library at Yale University and the American Philosophical Society.
