Carroll’s Summer Arts Series begins June 2

The Children’s Choir of Waukesha will perform the first event of Carroll University’s 2013 Summer Arts Series at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 2. This event is free and open to the public.

The outdoor concert will be at The Plaza between Shattuck Music Center, Todd Wehr Memorial Library, Otteson Theatre and Van Male Field House. If weather requires, the concert will be held in Otteson Theatre, 238 N. East Ave. Seating is first-come, first-served. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, picnic baskets and non-alcoholic beverages. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from Carroll University Dining Services.

Two of the five ensembles of the Children’s Choir of Waukesha will perform in the Summer Arts Series. The Advanced and Chamber Choir (grades 6-8) and the Women’s ChoralWorks (grades 9-12) will present a variety of music spanning all centuries and many different styles, including American folk songs, classical literature, music of Africa and African-American Spirituals.
The Children’s Choir of Waukesha was founded in 1999 by Diane Skrobis and is a partner with the First United Methodist in Waukesha. The five choirs span first through 12th grades and many of the students have been members since a preschool program, “The Singing Tree.” They have participated in state, divisional and national honor choirs.

Skrobis has taught music in the Waukesha area for 38 years, including pre-natal music, preschool, elementary, high school, college and adults. She taught in the Waukesha, Whitnall and Kettle Moraine school districts, at Pius XI High School, and was the music director for several local churches. She also directed Carroll’s “Project Create” choral program for 14 years.
