Carroll University history professor receives faculty award

An assistant professor of history has received the annual Carroll University award that recognizes excellence in teaching, research and educational innovation.

Dr. Scott Hendrix was presented the Benjamin F. Richason Jr. Faculty Award at the university’s Celebrating Success event on April 23, 2013. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history and English from Athens State University, and his master’s and doctoral degrees in history from the University of Tennessee. 

A Waukesha resident, Hendrix joined the Carroll faculty in 2007. He is known for making history “come alive” for his students and for guiding them to excel through innovative projects embedded in a range of assignments, from formal papers to capstone presentations. One of his nominators cited a student from whom Hendrix “turned what would have simply been a general education requirement into an entry point for a sustained line of inquiry into the study of history.” Another nominator, in describing Hendrix’s passion for teaching, noted that his active mentorship of Pioneer Scholars has been a great benefit to students.

Hendrix is an active and productive scholar. He published two books in 2012, “The Impact of the English Colonization of Oreland in the Sixteenth Century” and “Riot and Resistance in County Norfolk, 1646-1650: The Road to Rebellion in Seventeenth-century Britain.” In 2010, he published a monograph that was awarded the Professor D. Simmons Evans Prize for Outstanding Contributions to Medieval Studies.

This award is a memorial established by the family, friends and colleagues of the late Dr. Benjamin Richason, a professor of geography at Carroll from 1952 until his death in 1988.
