Carroll Politics Expert Publishes New Book

The University Press of Kentucky has published a new book edited by Dr. Lilly Goren, professor of political science at Carroll University, and Justin S. Vaughn, assistant professor of political science at Boise State University.

Women and the White House: Gender, Popular Culture, and Presidential Politics includes material by Goren, Vaughn and a team of interdisciplinary scholars who present myriad perspectives on gender, popular culture, and the American presidency.

On Nov. 20, Goren gave a public reading from the book at Boswell Book Company, 2559 N. Downer Ave., Milwaukee. Recently, she participated in the Kentucky Book Festival, where she discussed the book, and gave a presentation on the book to the North Boundary Hadassah Chapter in Deerfield, Ill.

The authors explore everything from the impact that Saturday Night Live had on the 2008 Presidential election to the "Colbert bump," in which the popular comedy news show The Colbert Report helps create a surge in popularity for any candidate who appears on the show. They also touch on the stereotype that men are more skilled at conducting war or dealing with foreign policy than women and examine what the symbolic role of the president represents to the American people and how a female commander in chief might alter it.

Goren also teaches global studies at Carroll. Her published works include Not in My District: The Politics of Military Base Closures and You've Come a Long Way, Baby: Women, Politics, and Popular Culture, and articles in Political Research Quarterly, White House Studies and Berkeley Electronic Press's The Forum. She is chair of the American Political Science Association's Politics, Literature and Film section. She has also served as an executive board member for the Presidents and Executive Politics Section of the American Political Science Association.
