United Way Connects the Community to Volunteer Opportunities

(September 4, 2013)—United Way in Waukesha County would like to invite volunteers to the following volunteer opportunities:

Tutors Needed!, Waukesha

The Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha (LCGW) needs volunteers to work with children and adults in improving their reading, writing, math, and English speaking skills! LCGW will be hosting its annual "90 Tutors in 90 Days" Campaign from September 8th to December 8th. Help us Reach 90 Tutors in 90 Days! Multiple informational meetings will be held throughout the community in September to learn more about this opportunity.

Community Poster And Brochure Distribution For The Wisconsin Philharmonic, Waukesha

The Wisconsin Philharmonic is in search of community representatives who would distribute posters and brochures throughout their communities 7-8 times in the year. All posters and brochures would be picked up from The Wisconsin Philharmonic office in downtown Waukesha. A list of businesses and community locations would be provided per community. The following communities would be covered by 1-2 volunteers: Brookfield, Delafield, Dousman, Elm Grove, Hartland, Mukwonago, Nashotah, New Berlin, Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, Wauwatosa, and Waukesha. Each poster distribution would take 1-2 hours, but would need to be completed in the time period listed below. The next poster distribution is September 23-27. Each community representative would need his or her own vehicle. A brief training is provided.

Sing Along Helpers, Brookfield

Volunteers are needed to assist residents in getting to and from a sing-along that occurs weekly on the second floor. Assist in passing out rhythm instruments and join us in song! If you play a musical instrument, share your talent! Requirements: Volunteers must be a minimum of 18 years old, however families are welcome.

Deliver Books and Form Friendships, Menomonee Falls

The Menomonee Falls Public Library offers delivery service to homebound patrons in the community. We rely on volunteers to sustain this much needed service. In order to reach as many homebound community members as possible, more volunteers are needed. Homebound delivery volunteers are asked to commit to picking up and dropping off library materials once a month. Every volunteer is paired with a few patrons and often this delivery develops into a friendship. Requirements: Must have access to transportation.

Electrician, Waukesha

Share your electrician skills! An experienced person, willing to be called for occasional electrical repairs, is needed. We're looking for an adult with knowledge and experience in small electrical repairs. Duties may include: fixing fluorescent light fixtures, repairing indoor exit signs, etc. Requirements: Volunteers must be a minimum of 18 years old. You will need to bring your own tools and ladder. A criminal background check is required.
