United Way Connects the Community to Volunteer Opportunities

(August 8, 2013)—United Way in Waukesha County would like to invite volunteers to the following volunteer opportunities:

Backpack Distribution, Backpack Coalition, Inc., Waukesha

On August 24, help distribute backpacks filled with grade appropriate school supplies to children and families who have applied for assistance with needed with back to school supplies. This is such a rewarding experience for volunteers! To see a child's face light up as they pick out their backpack - so uplifting! Last year we provided over 2,000 children and families with backpacks. Requirements: Volunteers need to have the ability to stand and to pick up and give backpacks to children. A pleasant disposition and patience are required.

Volunteer Greeter/Admin Assistant, Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin, Oconomowoc

Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity that both makes a difference and keeps things simple? Consider volunteering at Waukesha County Health and Human Services as an Administrative Assistant. In this feel-good position you will welcome and check clients in to our waiting area and notify staff of their clients’ arrival. You will also help maintain our waiting area and help with occasional administrative tasks such as sorting, envelope stuffing, etc. Requirements: This is an ideal opportunity for outgoing and friendly people who enjoy interaction. This opportunity is available with various shift options Monday-Friday.

Sole Trainer Coach – YMCA of Central Waukesha, Waukesha or Mukwonago

We are looking for motivated coaches to lead our new running program for girls in grades 3-6. Girls will learn to run a 5K but will also learn healthy skills and running techniques. They will run a race together at the conclusion of the program. Head coaches will lead the big group and follow the curriculum, as well as track participant progress. Head coaches would need to be available during both the Tuesday and Saturday times. Assistant coaches will follow the curriculum and instructions of the head coach, but may just commit to once a week. The curriculum is designed and lesson plans and equipment will be provided.

Requirements: Volunteers will need to commit to an 8 week session, coaching Tuesdays from 6-7 PM and/or Saturdays from 9-10 AM at either the Waukesha YMCA or Mukwonago YMCA. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to coach, or 18 to be a head coach.

Fall Plant Sale Helper, Waukesha County Park System, Waukesha

Retzer Nature Center is in need of volunteers to help at their annual fall plant sale on Saturday, August 24 from 8:30am-1:00pm! Volunteering at the plant sale is a great way to meet new people, learn about Retzer Nature Center, and learn about native plants. Volunteers are needed to assist plant sale customers by carrying plants, rain barrels, and compost bins to their cars. Volunteers are also needed to help direct traffic. Want to volunteer but don't want to do all the lifting? We also need volunteers to help fill out purchase slips at the cash register in order to keep the line moving. Requirements: Volunteers to help customers load plants should be able to lift at least 25 lbs. Some knowledge of plants may be useful to anyone who wants to volunteer at the register.
