Students Help Waukesha Chamber “Name the Fox” Mascot to Lead the
2013 Christmas Parade on November 24
(Waukesha) The City of Waukesha Chamber of Commerce invited
thousands of local second and third grade students last spring to color a
picture of their new mascot, a red fox, and to give the character a name. On
Saturday, Becca Guth of Prairie Elementary School was announced as the winner
from among more than 100 entries received from 14 local schools. Her winning
entry suggested naming the fox “Morris” to honor early Waukesha settler Morris Cutler, and the panel of judges felt it was the best way for the region’s
newest community chamber of commerce to maintain a connection to the city’s
rich history.

“We were thrilled with the broad participation and the many
creative suggestions we received,” announced Carol Smith, owner of Employment
Readiness Solutions and member of the chamber board of directors. Smith
presented both the winning student and her school with a gift certificate for
$100 for school supplies from Office Depot. Smith also thanked the “truly
esteemed panel of judges” who awarded over a dozen ribbons for exceptional
creativity and artwork. Former Waukesha mayor Carol Lombardi chaired the panel,
along with Town of Waukesha Chairman John Marek and Mary Ellen Schickowski, a
retired Waukesha elementary teacher and award-winning volunteer with the
Waukesha County Historical Society.
“Morris the Chamber Fox” will appear in a new section of the
chamber website launching later this month called “Kidz Biz” and highlighting
different occupations and careers represented by the chamber’s many member
businesses. Cox Plumbing has already commissioned a coloring page to allow Morris to try his hand at fixing a leaky sink. Additionally, Morris will lead
the 2013 Waukesha Christmas Parade through the streets of downtown for the 51st
installment of the popular event on Sunday, November 24. The chamber has assumed the role of parade organizer this year.
