No Action Taken on Water Service Area

Town of Waukesha Board of Supervisors could vote on issue during March 24 meeting

The Town of Waukesha Board of Supervisors met in closed session on Tuesday to discuss if it wants to be included in a water service area that the City of Waukesha has developed as part of the city’s application for Great Lakes water but did not vote on the issue or make any comments during the open portion of the meeting.

Town Chairwoman Angie E. Van Scyoc said prior to the meeting she did not expect the board to vote on the issue. The issue is likely to be discussed at the March 24 Town Board meeting.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is asking the city to obtain the approval of the town board to include the town lands in the future water service area, which is a plan that is a requirement of the application. The town’s approval does not automatically mean the town land would receive Great Lakes water if the application is approved, but it does mean the town has the possibility to receive Lake Michigan water in case it experiences well failures.

The town board’s agenda for the closed session stated the board was “deliberating or negotiating the purchasing of public properties, the investing of public funds, or conducting other specified public business, whenever competitive or bargaining reasons require a closed session with respect to a water service area proposal.”

Town Attorney Hector de la Mora said the issue was discussed in closed session as it related to bargaining and negotiations.
